Hamleys ditches gendered store labelling
Tuesday 13 December 2011
The infamous pink floor for girls and blue floor for boys are replaced by red and white labelling and with toys arranged by type rather than by gender.
Hamleys deny this was anything to do with a campaign ongoing at the time that described a 'gender apartheid' in-store. The change is a step in the right direction, but it remains to be seen what a difference this really makes. Well done Laura Nelson for your work on this.
The press response has been big; here's coverage from The Telegraph on Hamleys' announcement, and The Guardian on whether gender preferences are nature/nurture.

"This campaign is way overdue. Pink does stink – it has the reek of Sugababe, Spice Girl and all things nice. It is the colour of the glass ceiling that traps young girls’ aspirations in a perfect pink bubble – pretty, pleasant and politely imprisoning."
